Puron
A Cleaner, Greener Future
The Need
United Technologies needed a new name for their environmentally sound Freon® replacement. With Freon being phased out due to concerns like global warming, the new refrigerant had to meet several key criteria:
- It needed to sound similar to Freon for ease of adoption.
- It had to be simple for dealers to explain to customers.
- It should be short enough to create a “billboard effect” on trucks.
- It also need to sound greener and more environmentally friendly than Freon.
The Name
Puron was selected as the name. It retained the same “-on” suffix as Freon, making it easy for retailers to compare the two refrigerants and help customers make the switch. The “Pur-” root suggested purity, cleanliness, and environmental responsibility, aligning with the brand’s green positioning.
The Result
Puron was a resounding success. It was easy to adopt and communicate, helping dealers explain the switch to customers. The short, punchy name provided strong visibility, even on trucks, and conveyed a more environmentally friendly alternative to Freon. Puron helped United Technologies establish a competitive point of differentiation for their Carrier and Bryant products, solidifying the new refrigerant’s place in the marketplace.
